Forest City Historical Society – Movie Mission of the Shark

May 27, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Historical Society is doing a big event over the Memorial Day Weekend. On Friday night, May 27th, we will show the movie Mission of the Shark, which depicts the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during WWII. The Indianapolis was the ship that delivered the components of the Atom Bomb to Tinian Island, and on its return, was sunk by a Japanese sub. The mission had been so top secret that the ship was never reported missing, leaving 1100 men stranded in the shark infested waters of the South Pacific. Only 319 survived, one of which was Forest City/Browndale’s own hometown hero, Joe Kiselica.
The Indianapolis tragedy remains the worst Naval disaster in U.S.
history, and having a local tie to the story only makes it that much
more interesting.
